This Honey Mustard Recipe is incredibly quick and easy to make with just 3 ingredients. Sweet and tangy, this homemade honey mustard is the best dipping sauce, sandwich spread or salad dressing!
This honey mustard sauce recipe is so simple, and yet so versatile! This sweet and tangy sauce is my dipping sauce of choice for baked chicken tenders, air fryer chicken tenders, air fryer chicken wings, French fries and veggies. Like my honey mustard dressing, it is also perfect for drizzling on crisp green salads or roasted vegetables.
With just three ingredients, this creamy honey mustard sauce couldn’t be easier to make. The best part about making this from scratch is that you can customize the recipe to your tastes, making it a little sweeter or a little tangier, as desired. You’ll find all of my tips for making the best honey mustard sauce below!
How to Make Honey Mustard
Making this honey mustard is as simple as whisking the ingredients together until smooth. Then taste and adjust the flavors to your liking. More about that below!
Ingredients
- Dijon Mustard: I love the sharp, tangy flavor that a good Dijon mustard brings to this sauce. However, you can replace half of the Dijon with yellow mustard if you prefer a milder flavor.
- Plain Greek Yogurt: I usually use full fat Greek yogurt for a richer flavor, but low fat also works well. Many honey mustard recipes use mayonnaise, but I prefer using Greek yogurt because it’s lighter, healthier and slightly tangy. You may substitute mayo if you prefer.
- Honey: The sweetness balances out the tangy bite of the mustard.
Once you’ve mixed these together well, taste the honey mustard and adjust the ingredients to your preferences. If you’re using it as a dip for chicken, you may want more of a tangy kick to your sauce. If you’re drizzling it on a salad, you may want it more mild-flavored.
- If the mustard flavor is too strong, add a little more plain Greek yogurt (or mayo).
- If it’s too sweet, add a little more Dijon or yogurt (or mayo).
- If it’s not sweet enough, add a little more honey.
- For a spicy kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
- For a tangier sauce, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.

Ways to Use Honey Mustard Sauce
This creamy sauce is so versatile! Let me know in the comments below how you like to use it.
- Use it as a dip. It’s so good with chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, sweet potato fries, air fryer French friesand raw veggies.
- Enjoy it as a salad dressing. You can’t beat a creamy, sweet and tangy dressing on a simple salad.
- Serve it with roasted or grilled vegetables. It’s delicious drizzled on roasted asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes. Or serve honey mustard on the side as a veggie dip.
- Use it as a sandwich spread. Or add it to a wrap. It brings so much flavor!
- Try it as a marinade. Marinate chicken or pork tenderloin in the honey mustard and then cook the chicken or pork in the oven, in a skillet, or on the grill. (Discard the marinade after using.) For cooking tips, see my baked chicken, grilled chicken, and pork tenderloin recipes.
Honey Mustard Recipe Tips
- To make a dressing, either use my honey mustard dressing recipe or thin the sauce out with a little bit of olive oil. Or, replace half of the Greek yogurt with olive oil and add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice.
- You can scale this recipe up or down, depending on how many people you are serving.
- Honey mustard may be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 days, as long as that doesn’t exceed the expiration date on the yogurt. Stir to recombine the ingredients before serving.

Hello
Thank you for your wonderful recipes.
I have a question regarding the honey mustard sauce.
Instead of honey can I use maple syrup?Thank you.

If you are ok with the maple flavor coming through instead of a honey flavor, then yes.

I used half mayo and half Greek yogurt and added some cayenne. While the flavor is good, the sauce is way too loose/watery. I was hoping to use it as a dipping sauce but that will be very messy.

Using full fat plain Greek yogurt may help, since it has a thicker consistency.

A little too much DiJon for me so I added a tablespoon more of honey and mayo. It came out perfect. Taste just like at a restaurant. About 5 minutes to make.
